Be Together. Not the Same. Part 2

About 4 months ago I posted an article as to why I am going to purchase the iPhone. After a lot of thinking I have decided...

Cord Over Wireless Charging

Tuesday night you could find me in a Verizon Wireless store playing with a wireless charger while deciding if I NEED one or not. My first thought was will I sit my phone down long enough to let it charge?

Be Together. Not the Same. Part 1

I have been a dedicated Android user since 2009. I have always enjoyed the capabilities it possessed such as the open environment. My Android screams hack me, manipulate me, do cool stuff with me' and I say yeah, Yeah, YEAH!

3 Things You Never Thought a Smart Watch Could Do!

In anticipation of the soon to be world wide smart watch hype, I decided to get a Pebble Watch just to get an idea what it was like to have my phone notify me of things on my wrist. Instead I learned much more than that!

5 Ways to Maximize Productivity Using 1 Key

Many times when I show users shortcut keys using their keyboard they are very excited to have learned it so I thought I would pass it on. On a daily basis I use a number of keys on the keyboard to navigate different functions quickly without touching the mouse...

First Look at my #watchonlychallenge

In the spirit of the new LTE Apple Watch, I decided to create a challenge for myself to use only my Apple Watch for about 10 hours. I own a series 1 Apple Watch and I wanted to see the limits I could push it. Because I have a series 1 watch I kept my phone on my pocket to remain tethered to my watch. This is my initial review for my #watchonlychallenge.

Here it is, day one with my Apple Watch only for the day.

I started my challenge walking from my car to my office building. Before getting out of the car I wanted to listed to some tunes on the way to my office. Turned on my bluetooth Jaybird Freedom's and as normal it connects to my phone. So I navigate on my watch to start some music and then I get this message.

For some reason if I start a song from the watch it forces me to play it from the watch thus, I have to connect my headphones to the watch directly. After connecting my headphones to my watch I started my stroll.

After starting my day at work came the real test. I get many emails that are essentially a task list for me so depending on the urgency or situation I have to react differently with each situation. My watch helps me filter when to react. However, I have found that when certain emails needed attention in that moment I naturally pulled out my phone and started typing away (and I cursed myself each time I realized it).

It's lunch time now. I'm heading back to my car. Today I didn't have to pay 1/2 a mile away so it's a short walk and nice warm weather. I played more jams on the way but I couldn't see what was playing in bright daylight 🤔 (series 2 & 3 have brighter displays for this reason).

The afternoon was a repeat of the morning. It wasn't very exciting but here's why:

  • The #watchonlychallenge just turned into keep your phone on your pocket challenge. Instead of using my watch and phone I found myself just doing things I could do on my watch on my computer instead. I'd make sure to answer emails there, I answered text messages on my computer, etc.
  • This challenge helped me realize how slow apps were to open on my watch. I constantly found myself looking at my calendar using the Outlook app but it took forever. Using the modular watch face with the Outlook up next widget helped me stay on track.
  • I wrote out a few messages on my wasn't all. I did some voice to text too. I had to repeat a few statements but I believe this is due to Watch OS 4 being so new...I didn't have this problem in the past.
  • I expected phenomenal battery life from not using my phone. However, battery life remained the same on my phone. I was using iOS 11.0.2 on my iPhone where battery life was horrendous anyways.

This was a first look. I'll try it again soon. I think 3 days would be a sufficient amount of time.

I can't help but wonder if this experience would be better on a series 3....with my phone of course 😊.
